Your Business Doesn't Know What You Meant to Build

Jun 30, 2026

I was thinking about something after a client meeting recently.

Most business owners don't wake up one morning and decide they want to build a business that consumes their evenings, interrupts family vacations, or makes it impossible to step away for a week.

Yet somehow, that's where many of them end up.

They didn't start with a bad idea. Honestly, I think businesses are a lot like children. They become whatever we consistently reward.

Every time you're available 24/7...

Every time it's easier to solve the problem yourself...

Every time you say yes because the opportunity looks good...

Little by little, the business adapts to those decisions.

Before long, you're no longer running the business you imagined when you started. You're running the business your habits created.

I think that's one of the reasons I spend so much time talking about vision before strategy.

People often want to jump straight into hiring, marketing, pricing, or growth.

I agree that those are important conversations.

But I've learned that strategy without a clear vision has a funny way of taking you somewhere... you're just not sure it's where you wanted to go.

One of the first questions I ask clients isn't about revenue.

It's much simpler than that.

"What do you actually want your life to look like?"

Business strategy is important, but if you're not paying attention, your business has a funny way of growing into something you never intended... kind of like finding out your kids have been sneaking cookies every afternoon and wondering how that habit started.

I've watched owners redesign their compensation, reorganize their teams, and completely rethink how they spend their time.

To others, it looked like they "finally made it". What I saw was something much deeper than strategy.

They finally started designing it intentionally instead of letting it evolve by default.

There's a big difference between building a successful business and building the business you actually want to own.

If your business is becoming the sum of your daily decisions... what are you building today?

Until next time,

Go build a business your future self will thank you for.
