When Your Business No Longer Fits
Jun 30, 2026
I came across this picture the other day and laughed.
Then I realized it wasn't actually funny.
Well... maybe a little.
Because we've all done some version of this.
Maybe not squeezing ourselves into a cardboard box, but definitely convincing ourselves something still fits when deep down we know it doesn't.
That got me thinking about business owners.
I can't tell you how many conversations I've had over the years where the owner wasn't frustrated because the business was failing.
Quite the opposite.
The business was growing.
Revenue was up.
The team was bigger.
Things looked great from the outside.
And yet, if we sat together long enough, I'd eventually hear something like...
"This just isn't what I thought it would look like."
I don't think they're talking about the business.
I think they're talking about their life.
Somewhere along the way, they built a business that made perfect sense for who they were five or ten years ago.
Back then, saying yes to everything was exciting.
Working nights and weekends felt worth it.
Being the person everyone depended on was almost a badge of honor.
Then life changed.
Maybe they got married.
Had kids.
Started caring more about experiences than proving something.
Or maybe they simply realized success wasn't going to feel the way they imagined.
The interesting part is the business usually doesn't change on its own.
It just keeps doing what we've taught it to do.
Kind of like that one pair of jeans hanging in the closet.
You know the ones.
Every few months you convince yourself they'll fit exactly the way they used to.
Sometimes they do.
Most of the time... they don't.
The jeans aren't the problem.
You've changed.
I think businesses are a lot like that.
The business that fit your life five years ago may not fit the person you've become today.
And that's not failure.
That's growth.
The mistake isn't changing.
The mistake is assuming your business should never change with you.
One of the questions I find myself asking clients more and more isn't about revenue or profitability.
It's much simpler than that.
"If you were starting this business today, knowing what you know now and wanting the life you want now... would you build it the same way?"
I've never had anyone answer that question quickly.
Maybe because it's not really a business question.
Maybe it's a life question.
And I think the best businesses are designed to grow alongside both.
The goal isn't to keep fitting your life into your business. It's to keep designing your business around the life you're intentionally creating.
Until next time,
Go build a business your future self will thank you for.
